In a recent interview on Silverbird N24, legal practitioner Maxwell Opara spoke on the perceived bias within Nigeria’s political and judicial systems, highlighting how certain actions appear to favor specific parties.
During the interview, Opara stated, “One APC department is a PDP faction under Wike; anything favoring them is ‘constitutional’” He used the statement to criticize the inconsistent application of legal and political standards, suggesting that some decisions are influenced by partisan interests rather than fairness and the rule of law.
Opara explained that when one party is treated preferentially, it undermines the credibility of institutions and erodes public confidence in the electoral and judicial processes. According to him, such bias can distort democratic competition and weaken opposition parties, ultimately threatening the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.

He further argued that impartiality and adherence to legal principles are essential for ensuring that all political actors are treated fairly. Opara emphasized that the electorate must trust that institutions operate independently and that political favoritism does not dictate decisions.
The legal practitioner also highlighted that citizens are increasingly aware of these discrepancies and that continued partisanship risks creating widespread disillusionment with democratic governance. He stressed that consistent enforcement of the law and transparent decision-making are vital to maintaining political stability, particularly as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
Opara concluded by urging political and judicial authorities to uphold neutrality, stating that democracy thrives only when all parties are treated equitably. He emphasized that protecting institutional integrity is key to ensuring credible elections and fostering public confidence in the political system.
