In a recent statement, Araghchi referenced the role of William Westmoreland, who commanded American forces during the war. He noted that even as U.S. troops were suffering heavy casualties and the overall outcome of the conflict was becoming increasingly evident, efforts were still made to project optimism about the situation.
According to him, Westmoreland was brought back to the United States at a critical moment to reassure the public that the war effort was succeeding, with claims that the country was “winning.” Araghchi suggested that this example reflects how official narratives can sometimes differ from realities on the battlefield.
