Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has attributed the deadly Boko Haram attack on the 15 Task Force Brigade in Benesheik to a failure of intelligence, calling it one of the most “surprising attacks” he has witnessed in recent times.
The governor disclosed that troops had received credible intelligence of a potential assault three days before the attack, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday.
Despite this prior warning, the insurgents were able to strike, resulting in the death of Brigadier General OO Braimoh, the base commander, along with several others.
Speaking yesterday in Benesheik, Zulum urged the military to review its security architecture to address emerging threats more effectively.
He also questioned local leadership on their awareness and handling of the intelligence prior to the assault. The chairman of Kaga Local Government confirmed that intelligence reports had been received, further highlighting the lapse that allowed the attack to proceed.
Governor Zulum assured the troops of the Borno State government’s continued support in protecting lives and property. He also pledged to strengthen the resilience of local vigilantes, security personnel, and affected communities, warning that Benesheik must never fall to Boko Haram
