Ahead of the 10th edition of the Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa, to hold from April 20th to 21st, 2026 at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Center (CICAD) in Diamniadio, the need for sustainable African solutions to contemporary security challenges has come on the front burner once again, especially with reference to interrogating and assessing the impact of AU’s Agenda 2063 on the continent’s defense, security and stability.
Importantly, the debate on the role of information and communication in managing security challenges on the continent against the backdrop of the media’s growing influence on perceptions of crises was on the front burner of the discourse. The gathering specifically outlined the relationship between the defense/security forces and the media for effective crisis prevention and management.

Held annually, the forum, which is a leading African platform dedicated to strategic thinking on the challenges of peace, collective security, and governance on the continent, brings together heads of state and governments, economic and industrial partners and representatives of the civil society, serving as a space of rich exchange and debate, which has become an important international event.
This year’s forum will be chaired by the Senegalese president, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, under the theme, “Africa facing the challenges of stability, integration and sovereignty: what sustainable solutions?”
In setting the tone for the forum, the ‘Lunch for Editorialists,’ which held recently, was organised under the auspices of the Ministry of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad (MIAAESE). It featured different seasoned panelists. They spoke on diverse themes and was moderated by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Center for Advanced Studies in Defense and Security (CHEDS), Lieutenant General (2S) Abdoulaye Fall.
The Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad, Cheikh Niang, in his opening remarks, acknowledged that the continent is facing complex challenges, there’s a need for outlining sustainable solutions that will tackle these monstrous issues.
The Minister welcomed delegations from across the continent, including Angola, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Gambia, Guinea, Mali, Morocco, Mauritania, Nigeria, etc.
Niang emphasised that the Dakar Forum remains an essential platform for strategic thinking, Agenda 2063 and the architecture of peace under review.
He highlighted the need to integrate human factors, the environment, the economy, and technology while respecting the sovereignty of states.
He said: “This meeting is a very important gathering because it is playing host to actors that are focused on the peace and security of Africa. Everyone plays different role with relevant contributions and the role that Senegal plays is very important, especially with the annual Dakar Forum.
