The widow of late Nigerian boxer, Segun Olanrewaju, popularly known as Success, has narrated her ordeal following the death of her husband and described how she was allegedly subjected to humiliation and assault by members of his family.
She recounted that shortly after her husband’s passing, tensions arose within the family over issues relating to her role and rights as his wife.
She stated that during one of the confrontations, a member of the family approached her in an aggressive manner and physically attacked her in the presence of others.
She explained that the situation escalated quickly, creating a scene that drew the attention of people around who attempted to intervene.
The widow further detailed that beyond the physical altercation, she was also prevented from carrying out certain traditional marital rites that are typically observed by a wife after the death of her husband.
She said she was not given the opportunity to properly mourn her late husband in accordance with customs and expectations, a situation she described as painful and distressing.
According to her account, she was sidelined from participating in decisions and arrangements connected to her husband’s burial and other related matters.
She alleged that rather than being supported during her period of grief, she was confronted with accusations from members of her late husband’s family.
She claimed that some relatives openly questioned her loyalty to the deceased during his lifetime.
She also alleged that her first child was singled out during the disputes, with certain family members disputing the child’s paternity and insisting that the child did not belong to the late boxer.
She described the allegations as shocking and hurtful, especially given the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death.
The widow maintained that the accusations were made without consideration for her emotional state as a grieving spouse.
She further alleged that threats were made against her, including statements suggesting that her child could be taken away from her.
According to her, these threats deepened her fears and compounded the trauma she was already experiencing.
She said the hostility from the family created an atmosphere in which she felt unsafe and unwelcome.
She added that the strain of the conflict made it difficult for her to focus on mourning her husband or making arrangements for the future.
The widow explained that she was excluded from accessing certain matters connected to her late husband, including issues she believed she was entitled to as his spouse.
She alleged that she was denied information and participation in discussions that concerned her husband’s affairs.
She said the treatment she received left her feeling isolated and unfairly treated at a time when she expected empathy and understanding.
She recounted the specific incident that she said marked a turning point in the conflict with the family.
She said, “The next thing the sister did was to walk to me and slapped my face. While the last born of their house said she will beat me. People were holding her that this is not what this lady needs.”
