‘Fawehinmi, Osoba and I Were Taken to the Mortuary; Dele Giwa Was in Pieces’ — Ita Giwa

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, the former lawmaker described Giwa as a man of exceptional intellectual depth and courage. She said his sharp mind and fearless approach to issues stood out throughout his career and were among the traits she respected most about him.

Reflecting on the events that followed his death, Senator Ita Giwa recounted visiting the mortuary at a teaching hospital in the company of former Ogun State governor Segun Osoba and renowned human rights lawyer Gani Fawehinmi. She described the experience as profoundly traumatic.

According to her, the three of them were led into the mortuary where she was confronted with the remains of her former husband. She said the sight left her struggling to comprehend the magnitude of the loss and the brutality of the situation.

In her words: “This same man what I saw in the mortuary at the teaching hospital along with Segun Osoba and Gani Fawehinmi, the three of us were taken into the mortuary and I saw the human being lying in pieces. So how much can a human being take? And I took all that in.”

Her remarks have reignited memories of one of Nigeria’s most tragic moments in media history. Dele Giwa’s death remains a significant reference point in discussions surrounding press freedom and justice in the country. Through her reflections, Senator Ita Giwa offered a deeply personal account of grief, resilience, and the emotional weight carried by those closest to the late journalist.
