According to a report by the Times of Israel on Thursday 2 April, 2026, in a move that’s raising eyebrows in Washington, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked the Army’s top officer, General Randy George, to step down, according to Pentagon officials.
The request, which effectively pushes George toward early retirement, comes at a sensitive moment as the United States remains deeply involved in its ongoing war with Iran. One official, speaking privately due to the nature of the decision, confirmed that the Army chief of staff – a position George has held since August 2023 – has been told to leave his post.

George himself has had a long military career. A West Point graduate and infantry officer, he served during the Gulf War and later deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. More recently, he worked closely with former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin before moving into senior Army leadership.
