According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday, April 2, 2026, former senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu is not interested in allowing elections to take place next year.
The former lawmaker expressed his views during an interview on Channels Television, highlighting what he perceives as a growing reluctance within the political leadership to adhere to democratic timelines.
Melaye’s remarks come amid heightened political discussions about the readiness of parties and the government for the upcoming electoral season, as well as concerns over political maneuvering that could affect the electoral process.
During the interview, Melaye drew attention to the state of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, describing the party as exhibiting signs of desperation.

He suggested that this desperation reflects deeper uncertainties within the party regarding the electoral landscape.
The former senator implied that rather than focusing on strengthening democratic institutions, some party leaders are preoccupied with strategies to maintain power and control over political outcomes.
Melaye emphasized his surprise at what he described as the panic within the APC.
He questioned the party’s apprehensions, noting that the party controls a significant number of state governments.
He expressed confusion over why a party with 32 governors would appear fearful of the political competition ahead.
According to Melaye, this fear contradicts the party’s public image of political dominance and raises questions about its internal stability and confidence in the electoral process.
The former senator also addressed the issue of opposition parties, noting that the matter at hand is not about any single party, such as the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
