Iran Warns U.S. Ford Carrier Presence in Red Sea Poses Security Threat, Could Be A Target

According to a Monday 16 of March 2026 report by Al Jazeera English, Iran has warned that the deployment of a United States (US) aircraft carrier in the Red Sea is being viewed as a security threat, raising concerns about the potential for further military tension in the region.

Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, said the presence of the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford in the strategic waterway is being closely monitored by Iranian forces.

According to remarks reported by the semi-official Fars news agency, Zolfaghari indicated that Iran considers the carrier’s deployment a hostile development amid already strained relations between Tehran and Washington.

He said the carrier’s arrival has military implications that extend beyond the vessel itself, particularly regarding the network that supports its operations in the region.

Zolfaghari warned that infrastructure linked to the carrier’s deployment could become part of Iran’s military calculations if tensions escalate.

“The presence of the US aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford in the Red Sea is considered a threat,” Zolfaghari said.

He added that facilities assisting the carrier group would also fall within the scope of Iran’s defensive planning.

“This means that the logistical and support centres serving the carrier group in the Red Sea are considered ‘targets’ of Iran’s armed forces,” he said.

The Red Sea is a key maritime corridor linking the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean through the Suez Canal and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. It carries significant volumes of global trade and energy shipments, making military deployments in the region closely watched by international observers.

The USS Gerald R. Ford, the lead ship of the US Navy’s newest class of aircraft carriers, is capable of supporting extensive air operations and projecting military power across large areas. Its presence in regional waters is often interpreted as a signal of deterrence during periods of geopolitical tension.

Iran’s warning comes as the Middle East continues to experience heightened military activity involving regional and international forces. Statements from military officials on both sides have added to concerns that the situation could widen if further deployments or confrontations occur.
