According to Fox News, former United States President Barack Obama has expressed deep concern about the current state of politics and public discourse, saying the environment today makes it increasingly difficult for many people to remain hopeful.
Obama made the remarks while delivering a eulogy at the funeral of veteran civil rights leader Jesse Jackson.
In his speech, the former president reflected not only on Jackson’s lifelong struggle for justice and equality but also on the challenges facing society today.
He suggested that the present political climate appears to reward negative behaviors while discouraging the values that once guided public life.
According to Obama, many troubling attitudes are becoming more visible and even celebrated in modern society.
He said, “Everywhere we see greed and bigotry being celebrated, and bullying and mockery masquerading as strength.”
His comments pointed to what he described as a culture where intolerance and aggression are often presented as signs of power, while empathy and respect are pushed aside.
The former president also voiced concern about the way knowledge and professional expertise are increasingly dismissed in public conversations.
He noted that scientists, experts, and credible voices are sometimes undermined or ignored, even when they provide evidence-based guidance on important issues.
Highlighting this trend, Obama said, “We see science and expertise denigrated while ignorance and dishonesty and cruelty and corruption are reaping untold rewards.”
He warned that such developments create an environment where misinformation and unethical conduct can thrive.
Obama explained that repeatedly witnessing these patterns can weaken people’s optimism about the future.
Reflecting on the emotional toll of the situation, he stated, “Every single day we see that, and it’s hard to hope.”
Despite the somber tone, his remarks also served as a reminder of Jackson’s legacy of resilience and determination in the fight for justice, urging listeners to continue striving for a more just and compassionate society.
