In a recent interview on The Volume Pod, Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media and spokesperson to the Chairman of the Labour Party, discussed party financing and broader political structures in Nigeria, drawing comparisons with other major political parties.
According to Asogwa, “If Tinubu tells the 30 APC governors, ‘I need 1 billion from each,’ that is 30 billion on the table,” a statement highlighting what he described as the financial strength available to the ruling political establishment.
He explained that parties with numerous governors and elected officials often have greater access to resources that can support nationwide political activities. Asogwa noted that financial backing plays a significant role in campaign organisation, logistics, and mobilisation, especially in a large democracy like Nigeria.
He stressed that despite such financial dynamics, the Labour Party is focused on strengthening its internal structures and expanding grassroots engagement rather than depending on what he described as deep-pocket funding arrangements. According to him, the party is working to build sustainable systems that can support its long-term political ambitions.
Asogwa added that organisational discipline, transparency, and accountability remain central to the Labour Party’s strategy. He said the party is prioritising membership expansion, improved coordination at the polling unit level, and enhanced stakeholder engagement to ensure competitiveness in future elections.
He further emphasized that political parties must rely on credibility and structured planning to succeed in modern electoral contests. While acknowledging the influence of financial resources in politics, Asogwa maintained that strong organisation and public trust are equally important for electoral success.
