According to a report by Vanguard on Friday, March 6, 2026, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, stated that she has found it difficult to maintain lasting relationships with people who do not believe in God.
She shared this reflection while speaking about her almost 40-year marriage to President Bola Tinubu, who practices Islam. Despite their different religious backgrounds, she explained that their relationship has remained peaceful over the years.
The First Lady made the remarks during an Interfaith Breaking of Fast held at the Old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday night. The gathering brought together Christian and Muslim leaders, as well as wives of state governors from various parts of the country.
During her address, Senator Tinubu emphasized the need for harmony among Nigeria’s different religious communities. She also highlighted the role women play in guiding younger generations by instilling strong moral and ethical values.
She noted that maintaining peace at the personal and family level is important, especially in a country facing challenges such as insecurity and social divisions. According to her, mutual respect and understanding can help address these broader issues.
The First Lady also encouraged women in leadership positions to serve with dedication and compassion, particularly during religious periods like Ramadan and Lent when both faiths observe spiritual reflection.
Speaking further about her marriage, she explained that respect and maturity have been key factors in sustaining their relationship and resolving disagreements peacefully.
She said that in their many years together, arguments have rarely escalated to the point of raised voices. According to her, such incidents have occurred only once or twice throughout their four decades of marriage, which she described as evidence of the mutual respect they share.
