Maria Adebusola, the widow of late Nigerian boxer Segun Olanrewaju, widely known as Success, has opened up about the painful experience she endured during her husband’s burial in Ghana.
In an interview with Punch Newspapers, Adebusola alleged that she was sidelined and humiliated by members of her late husband’s family during the funeral proceedings.
Recounting the incident, she said the body was prepared in the early hours before the burial arrangements began without her involvement.
“So when it was 5:00, they packed the body. They proceeded to go and bury him. So I called my husband’s family to tell them that they’ve left only me and my children,” she said.
According to her, she and her children were left behind as other family members moved ahead with the burial. She explained that it was her husband’s best friend who later stepped in and arranged transportation for her to join the funeral procession.
However, upon arrival, she said another confrontation erupted. Adebusola claimed she was stopped from entering the vehicle conveying family members to the burial site. She alleged that some relatives insisted she was not legally married to the late boxer and described her as merely a “baby mama.”
The situation reportedly worsened when they questioned the paternity of her first child, an accusation she described as deeply hurtful.
Adebusola said she refused attempts to take her children from her to perform the final rites in her absence. She maintained that since she was denied the opportunity to take part in the mourning rituals herself, she would not allow anyone to separate her from her children.
Eventually, she said she left the scene, while her husband’s close friend stayed behind to witness the burial before returning to her.
