JUST UN: ‘God Was So Merciful’ — Sanusi Speaks on How He Got Opportunity to Earn PhD

According to a report by Vanguard, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has reflected on the difficult period of his life when he was removed from the throne and spent several years away from Kano.

Sanusi spoke about the experience during the Fola Adeola Annual Ramadan Lecture, where he shared lessons about faith, patience and resilience in times of hardship.

The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria said losing a position in life should not make anyone lose hope, adding that circumstances can always change.

While addressing the audience, Sanusi explained that many people wrongly believe their success or failure depends only on powerful individuals.

According to him, everything that happens in life is ultimately under the control of God, and people should remember that situations are not permanent.

He warned against humiliating oneself just to please those in authority or to secure a position.

Sanusi said he had seen people beg and bow before others because they believed those individuals controlled their destiny. He advised people to remain dignified and trust that their situation can improve with time.

Reflecting on his own journey, Sanusi recalled that his removal as Emir in 2020 turned out to be an opportunity for personal growth.

During the period he spent away from the palace, he focused on academic work and continued his studies.

Speaking about that time in his life, he said, “God was so merciful. He took me away, gave me a chance to do a PhD, and I’m back.”

Sanusi explained that being away from Kano for several years helped him avoid situations that might have brought unnecessary humiliation or conflict.

He used the period to improve himself academically and spiritually.

The respected traditional ruler also reminded people that holding public office should not be the most important goal in life.

According to him, what truly matters is living a life that does not go against one’s principles or faith.

Sanusi previously served as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from 2009 to 2014 before later becoming the Emir of Kano.

He was removed from the throne in 2020 during the administration of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje but was reinstated in 2024 by Abba Kabir Yusuf.
