Kai Havertz’s Late Penalty Earns Arsenal F.C. 1–1 Draw Against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in UEFA Champions League

Arsenal secured a dramatic late draw against Bayer Leverkusen after Kai Havertz converted a stoppage-time penalty in their UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash.

The match at the BayArena ended 1-1, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg in London.

Both sides struggled to break the deadlock in a cautious first half, with clear chances limited as the teams tried to gain control of the contest.

Leverkusen eventually took the lead shortly after the break. Midfielder Robert Andrich rose to score with a header early in the second half, giving the German side a 1-0 advantage and putting pressure on the visitors.

Arsenal pushed forward in search of an equaliser as the game progressed, but Leverkusen’s defence held firm for most of the second half.

However, the match took a dramatic turn deep into stoppage time when Arsenal winger Noni Madueke was brought down inside the penalty area by Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba.

The referee awarded a penalty, and Havertz stepped up to take the spot-kick against the club where he began his professional career. The German international calmly slotted the ball into the net to level the score and deny the hosts victory.

The late goal ensures everything remains to play for in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium, where Arsenal will hope to take advantage of home support to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
