Katsina disburses N4.7bn Zakat to support vulnerable residents

As reported by Punch on April 2, 2026, the Katsina State Zakat and Waqf Board has reached a significant milestone in social welfare by realizing and distributing approximately ₦4.7 billion in Zakat to support vulnerable residents.

Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, the Executive Secretary of the board, disclosed these figures during a two-day Social Protection Technical Working Groups meeting in Kaduna, organized by the UNICEF Kano Field Office.

The initiative represents a successful revival of the Islamic social welfare system in the state, designed to alleviate poverty and foster community solidarity.

Although the board was established in 2017, it only reached full operational capacity in 2024, focusing its initial efforts on agricultural Zakat due to the predominantly agrarian nature of Katsina’s economy.

The distribution process followed the core Islamic principle of collecting from the wealthy and redistributing to the needy within the same locality to ensure maximum impact.

To facilitate this, specialized district committees were created to oversee the collection and direct distribution of resources.

Through these committees, over 86,000 bags of grain were gathered and provided to more than 250,000 beneficiaries across the state.

Dr. Yusuf noted that the board has significantly strengthened its monitoring systems to enhance transparency and build public trust, ensuring that every collection is meticulously documented.

This focus on accountability has already yielded results, with collections in 2026 showing a 50% increase, totaling over 100,000 bags of grain.

In a further expansion of the program, the board has introduced livestock Zakat following a directive from the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Faruq Lawal-Jobe.

This addition aims to diversify the support provided to vulnerable families and strengthen the state’s overall social safety net.

By focusing on direct community intervention and leveraging local agricultural wealth, Katsina State is positioning the Zakat and Waqf Board as a central pillar of its social protection strategy.
