Abubakar Bawa Kalgo, former Secretary of the Kebbi State branch of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has publicly resigned from the party, citing what he describes as its compromise and alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking to reporters in Birnin Kebbi on Monday, Kalgo claimed the party had essentially been “sold out,” a development that prompted the state executive committee to contemplate a joint resignation.
Kalgo’s resignation highlights a deep rift within the PDP’s state leadership. He explained that the Kebbi State executives initially boycotted a factional convention that nominated Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, adhering to a court order barring the event to uphold lawful practices. Later, believing another convention led by Nyesom Wike was legally valid, the executives participated, hoping to maintain the party’s democratic principles and proper representation. However, confidence in the Wike-led convention eroded when Wike publicly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a move Kalgo said contradicted the PDP’s fundamental role as an opposition party. According to him, this signaled a shift in loyalty inconsistent with the party’s core mission, disappointing the state executives.

Kalgo emphasized that the decision to resign was collective, with the entire state leadership—including the chairman and all executives—opting to step down together. He framed the resignations as a unified stand against what he perceived as the dilution of the party’s principles and undue association with the ruling APC. This development underscores the growing internal conflicts within Nigeria’s opposition parties, illustrating how legal disputes, perceived betrayals, and political endorsements can fuel fractures that threaten party cohesion.
