A coalition of youth organizations from Lokoja/Kogi Federal Constituency has called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure a transparent and fair process in selecting its senatorial candidate for Kogi West, warning against any attempt to impose a preferred aspirant.
The group raised the concern on Thursday amid growing speculations within political circles that the party may be considering handpicking a candidate for the highly contested ticket, a development they said could threaten party unity and stability in the region.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, spokesperson, Hon. Maiyaki Aliyu Bala, said the media briefing became necessary due to widespread rumours suggesting that the APC leadership might override the democratic aspirations of other qualified contenders.
He cautioned that imposing a candidate would be undemocratic and could spark internal divisions within the party, stressing that only a free and credible primary election can guarantee the emergence of a widely accepted candidate with genuine grassroots support.
Bala further provided historical context to justify the group’s position, noting that Lokoja/Kogi Federal Constituency has occupied the Kogi West senatorial seat for only eight years since the return of democratic rule.
In contrast, he said the Okun axis of the district has held the position for about 19 years through consistent rotation among its aspirants.
According to him, the disparity in representation has heightened concerns about marginalization and underscores the need for fairness in the upcoming selection process.
The coalition maintained that granting all aspirants equal opportunity would strengthen internal democracy within the APC and enhance the party’s credibility among members and the electorate ahead of future elections.
The youth leaders also warned that any attempt to impose a candidate could trigger discontent and anti-party activities, ultimately weakening the party’s chances at the polls.
They emphasized the importance of grassroots participation and the role of young people in mobilizing electoral support.
They, therefore, urged the APC leadership at both national and state levels to act in the collective interest of the party and the people of Kogi West by ensuring an open, credible, and inclusive process.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to peace and unity, expressing optimism that the party would heed their appeal and take steps to avert actions capable of destabilizing its structure or alienating deserving aspirants.
