Lere Olayinka, the senior special adviser on media to the FCT Minister and former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, recently commented following Wike’s statement that he has not yet endorsed any candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial elections. According to a post shared on Olayinka’s official X account, Wike emphasized that the decision will be made after consultations with party elders.
Wike, who also serves as the FCT Minister, recently drew attention when he led several prominent political figures to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention in Abuja. The convention, which was attended by numerous party members, was widely seen as a signal that longstanding internal disputes had been resolved as the PDP gears up for the 2027 general elections.
Back in Rivers State, Wike asserted his influence by making it clear that the PDP’s choice for gubernatorial candidate would follow discussions with elders. This statement was highlighted in a recent post by Olayinka on March 31, 2026, on his X handle. In the post, he reiterated that Wike had not yet adopted a preferred candidate for the election.
It is noteworthy that the current governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, had previously defected to the ruling APC due to disagreements with Wike, adding context to the ongoing political dynamics in the state.
Olayinka’s post provided clarity on Wike’s stance and included a video capturing his statement, emphasizing that any official endorsement will only follow careful consultation with party elders.
