Former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Usman Yusuf, has commented on recent political developments in Nigeria, including the defection of the Zamfara State governor to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has increased the party’s number of governors to 31.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Yusuf said many governors and political figures are aligning with the APC because they believe their political future is tied to the party and its leader, President Bola Tinubu. However, he cautioned that even if all 36 state governors eventually join the APC, it would not automatically secure victory for Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Yusuf explained that electoral success goes beyond political influence or numerical strength. According to him, winning an election depends on two critical factors: the support of the citizens and the favor of God. He argued that the current challenges facing the country—such as corruption, widespread hunger, and insecurity—suggest that victory cannot be achieved through coercion or political pressure.
He also criticized the motivations behind some political defections, claiming that financial incentives and promises often influence politicians. Yusuf noted that certain governors may view large monetary offers as rewards for their loyalty.
He stated, “Mr. President, if no one is telling you the truth, even if all 36 governors defect to the APC, it will not guarantee victory in 2027. You need two endorsements—the support of the people, which you currently lack, and the approval of God Almighty.”
