President Is Practically Involved In The Processes Of The Election, And That Is Not democracy–Tanko

Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, alleged that the presidency is interfering in Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections. He stated that the country is witnessing a situation where the President is directly involved in election-related matters, which contradicts democratic principles that require a clear separation between political power and institutions responsible for conducting free and fair elections.

He asserted that it is disappointing to see a shift in the President’s democratic credentials, alleging that despite publicly presenting himself as a supporter of democracy, his actions suggest otherwise. He claimed that the President is disrupting party leadership structures and influencing decisions of electoral bodies, which goes against the administration’s commitment to democratic values.

He further noted that the President was once regarded as a pro-democracy figure who contributed to efforts aimed at institutionalizing democratic governance during Nigeria’s military era, and that the current situation represents a betrayal of that legacy, as such interference undermines the progress made in strengthening electoral independence and fairness over the years.

Tanko warned that continued executive influence over political and legal processes could threaten the credibility of the 2027 elections and weaken public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic system.

In a recent interview with Arise TV, he said, “In this situation, we are seeing the president who is practically involved in the processes of the election, and that is not democracy. Unfortunately for us, some of us who know the president very well know him to be a poser who believes in democracy. In fact, he was part of the people who helped in trying to institutionalize democracy.”
