The Reds were awful in Turkey on Tuesday evening, giving themselves plenty of work to do in the second leg at Anfield next Wednesday.
Arne Slot clearly wasn’t amused with what he saw from his players, with Liverpool’s head coach giving an honest assessment after the game.
“I think we started the game really well, even better than three months ago,” Slot said.
“We were having three or four great moments, with, of course, the biggest moment when Florian [Wirtz], I didn’t see it back but it came across as almost an open goal where he could finish that ball.
“We weren’t able to score. Like last time, when we had our chances they five seconds later got their first attack, led to a corner.
“You have to give credit for the way when they get a chance they play as if it is the last chance of their lives.
“That is definitely something we can learn from them because we sometimes get our chances and it comes across as if we think we get 10 more.”
Taking to X, Lindop singled out Gomez and Konate for criticism, with the pair hugely below-par in a defensive that made too many errors:
“Probably not the worst result for Liverpool. Way too many players miles off it. Defensively shambolic at times and wasteful in attack. Joe Gomez and Ibou Konate really struggled at times. Big night at Anfield next week.“
Simply not good enough from Liverpool duo
Gomez and Konate were so poor against Galatasaray, with the latter particularly bad, making constant mistakes and finding himself rescued by VAR after a string of errors that led to a goal.
The Liverpool duo are now experienced players who simply cannot expect to just be carried by Virgil van Dijk week in, week out, especially given the Dutchman’s age now.
Konate’s form has been so much better of late, but this was a return to the awful performances of earlier in the season, and he still lacks the consistency to be considered an elite centre-back.
If he is to sign a contract extension at Liverpool and become the leader of the defence after Van Dijk, he cannot throw in displays like this during a season, especially in such a big game. See More
