According to a report by La Liga on Friday, March 6, Real Madrid reduced the gap at the top of the table to just one point after recording a dramatic 2–1 victory against RC Celta de Vigo. The late win has increased pressure on league leaders FC Barcelona ahead of their upcoming match this weekend.
The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time when Federico Valverde struck the winning goal for Madrid. His effort took a deflection off Marcos Alonso before finding the net, sealing three crucial points for the visitors. The victory ended Madrid’s run of two league matches without a win and kept their title hopes firmly on track.
Madrid had earlier taken the lead through Aurélien Tchouaméni, whose shot rebounded into the goal after hitting the woodwork. Moments before that, teammate Vinícius Júnior had also come close after striking the post during an attacking move.
However, the home side responded quickly to restore balance in the game. Trent Alexander-Arnold was beaten on the wing by Williot Swedberg, who delivered a cross into the box that was finished by Borja Iglesias to make it 1–1.
Madrid went into the match dealing with several injury setbacks, as key players such as Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, and Eduardo Camavinga were unavailable for selection. Head coach Álvaro Arbeloa therefore had to make adjustments to his lineup.
Despite those challenges, Madrid managed to secure the victory through Valverde’s late strike. The result means they now sit just one point behind Barcelona in the standings. Barcelona will have the chance to restore their advantage when they travel to face Athletic Bilbao in their next league fixture.
