According to a report by Manchester World on Thursday March 5, 2026, Manchester United remain in third place in the Premier League after suffering a disappointing defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday night.
Newcastle secured a narrow win despite being reduced to ten players. Substitute Will Osula proved decisive as the home side held on for victory following a poor performance from United. Anthony Gordon initially gave Newcastle the lead with a penalty after Jacob Ramsey had been sent off. Casemiro later equalised for United just before half-time. Although the dramatic end to the first half suggested momentum might swing toward United, they failed to improve after the break and delivered a weak second-half display.
As a result, United missed the opportunity to move closer to securing Champions League qualification with only nine league games remaining this season. Liverpool had lost to Wolves the previous night, while Aston Villa were heavily beaten by Chelsea, meaning United could have strengthened their position further.
Finishing in the top four guarantees a place in next season’s Champions League. However, based on the current UEFA coefficient rankings, even a top-five finish could be enough to qualify.
Manchester United’s Next Five Matches
Despite the setback, Manchester United are still in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League ahead of rivals such as Aston Villa, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Michael Carrick’s team will have a break before their next match against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday, 15 March. They will then travel to face Bournemouth on Friday, 20 March.
After that, there will be another long pause before they host Leeds United on Monday, 13 April. United will then play Chelsea away on Saturday, 18 April, before returning home to face Brentford on Monday, 27 April.
