According to a report by TeamTalk on Friday March 6, 2026, Arsenal are reportedly leading the race among English clubs to sign Nico Williams from Athletic Club, despite the winger recently committing his future to the La Liga side.
Williams came close to joining FC Barcelona last summer after several discussions with sporting director Deco, while teammate Lamine Yamal hoped to reunite with him at club level.
However, the Spain international surprised many by rejecting Barcelona and signing a long-term ten-year contract extension with Athletic Club, choosing to remain with his boyhood side despite strong interest from several elite European teams.
Although injuries have disrupted his current campaign, limiting him to four goals and six assists in 26 appearances, Williams still ranks among Europe’s most exciting attacking talents and could eventually leave Athletic for a top club.
Reports claim Arsenal are currently best positioned to complete a major summer deal. The winger’s contract reportedly includes an £87m release clause, giving interested clubs a clear figure required to secure his services.
Arsenal previously explored a move last year and remain strong admirers of the 23-year-old. Sources suggest the player is open to considering a transfer again, which could reopen negotiations during the upcoming summer window.
Barcelona may still attempt another approach, while Real Madrid have also monitored Williams for years. Meanwhile, Arsenal are evaluating other targets including Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.
