SPORTS: Former Midfielder Calls for Update to League’s Penalty Rules

Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick has urged the Premier League to clamp down on grappling at set-pieces.

The former midfielder believes physical battles inside the penalty area have escalated beyond acceptable limits this season.

United goalkeeper Senne Lammens has faced intense pressure from opposition players during corners, notably against Arsenal and Everton.

Carrick argued that wrestling in the six-yard box has “gone too far,” claiming the balance between attack and defence has shifted.

He suggested previous attempts to restrict contact inside the box have gradually faded, allowing more aggressive tactics to emerge.

Carrick Questions Balance at Corners

The debate intensified after Arsenal’s recent victory over Chelsea, where both goals came from corners.

Carrick acknowledged teams exploit crowded penalty areas due to the high success rate from set-pieces.

However, he insisted the spectacle is suffering, with excessive grappling disrupting fair competition, reports Daily Star.

While stopping short of proposing a specific amendment, Carrick encouraged league authorities to review enforcement standards.

Despite his concerns, United have thrived during his seven-game spell, collecting 19 points from a possible 21.

Carrick maintained he is not surprised by the upturn in form, stressing consistency and belief remain central to results.
