Senator Ireti Kingibe has responded to recent remarks by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, saying she does not understand why he appears to be focused on her politically.
Speaking during an interview shared by Nigeria Info on YouTube, Kingibe said she had never met Wike before she became a senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, and also had no personal relationship with him before he was appointed minister. According to her, the only connection between them is their roles in government.
Her reaction follows comments attributed to Wike in which he reportedly said she would not return to the Senate in the 2027 elections and that he would work against her re-election.
Kingibe expressed surprise at the minister’s comments and suggested that the situation has become unnecessarily personal. She maintained that political power ultimately comes from God and cannot be controlled by any individual.
The senator also criticized what she described as a belief among some political figures that they can determine who holds public office in the country. She said such an attitude is unhealthy for Nigeria’s democracy.
Kingibe stressed that no single politician has the authority to decide her political future, adding that leadership positions should reflect the will of the people..
In her words, “The only thing that joins Wike and me is governance, so I don’t understand this his obsession.”
