Omoyele Sowore, a human rights campaigner, discussed Nigeria’s security issues and the country’s poor military capability in the face of global conflicts in a recent interview on Symfoni TV. Additionally, he addressed the wider ramifications of international conflicts and their potential impact on Nigeria’s standing in the world community.
Sowore contrasted Nigeria’s military might with that of nations participating in significant conflicts, notably Iran, throughout the talk. “We would have dropped a few bombs if we had the same capability as Iran, but none of our bombs are working,” Sowore stated. He maintained that Nigeria lacks the operational military might and leadership needed to react successfully to foreign threats or significant security concerns.
Nigeria’s inability to defend itself effectively is a result of years of mismanagement and corruption in the security industry, Sowore observed. He claims that money intended for military development and defense has frequently been misused, leaving the nation with a poor operational capability in the face of significant domestic security risks. He cautioned that Nigeria may be at risk in the event of a regional or worldwide escalation.
The problem was also connected by the activist to the larger insecurity situation gripping the nation. Although Nigeria is battling internal challenges such as terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping, he emphasized that the nation has not yet developed the robust and disciplined military institutions necessary to deal with these issues successfully. In his opinion, the nation’s leaders have failed to give priority to real changes in security.
Nigerian authorities should make a significant investment in the institutions responsible for national defense and security, Sowore said in conclusion. He stressed that Nigeria would continue to be exposed to both domestic and foreign vulnerabilities that put the security and stability of its people at risk in the absence of transparency, accountability, and strategic leadership.
