In a closely watched vote on Wednesday, the Senate rejected the measure by 53 to 47, largely along party lines, allowing the administration to continue its military campaign against Iran.
The decision is seen as a major political victory for Trump as his administration continues the joint US-Israel military operation known as “Operation Epic Fury.” The campaign began with large-scale strikes targeting military facilities and strategic infrastructure across Iranian territory. Supporters of the move argue the operation is necessary to counter Iran’s growing military threats in the region.
The vote has also highlighted deep political divisions in Washington over the legality and strategy of the military campaign, which has already resulted in American casualties and heightened tensions across West Asia.
Most Republican lawmakers rallied behind the president, arguing that Iran’s actions against American interests and regional allies justified the ongoing operation.
Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, strongly defended the military action while paying tribute to American troops killed during the conflict. He praised the administration’s resolve and emphasised the need to confront Iranian threats decisively.
The Senate Minority Leader, said Iran has repeatedly threatened both the United States and Israel but stressed that war powers must be exercised with the backing of public support and national interest.
Some Republican lawmakers expressed caution about expanding the conflict further. warned that he would oppose sending American ground troops into Iran, signalling that support for the campaign could have limits. In contrast, broke ranks with most Republicans and joined Democrats in supporting the resolution aimed at limiting the president’s authority.
The Senate vote came as US and Israeli forces intensified airstrikes across Iran. Defence officials said the campaign had already damaged parts of Iran’s missile infrastructure and naval capabilities, while operations were expanding deeper into Iranian territory.
Israeli forces also carried out strikes in the Iranian capital, targeting what officials described as strategic military sites. Meanwhile, reported intercepting an Iranian missile that was headed toward its airspace, raising concerns about the conflict spilling into neighbouring countries.
At the same time, announced plans to send a special envoy to help mediate and reduce tensions in the region. Several Western governments have also begun evacuating embassy staff and reinforcing military assets across the Middle East as the situation grows increasingly volatile.
Democrats, including , criticised the decision and warned that the president had launched the military campaign without proper authorisation from Congress. According to them, bypassing legislative approval undermines Congress’s constitutional authority over war powers.
Republicans, however, argued that halting the operation at this stage could endanger American troops already deployed in the region and weaken US strategic objectives.
With the Senate blocking the resolution, Trump retains broad authority to continue military operations against Iran alongside Israel, signalling that the conflict and the political debate surrounding it may intensify in the coming weeks.
