According to a report by Daily Trust on Saturday, April 4, 2026, amid increasing agitation from opposition figures and rising concerns expressed in public discourse about the state of opposition politics in Nigeria, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has spoken on the matter.
The concerns center on what many perceive as a gradual erosion of the strength and effectiveness of opposition parties within the country’s political landscape.
In a recent interview, Tanko addressed the ongoing debate surrounding the alleged marginalisation of opposition voices.
He also spoke about claims that certain institutions may be influencing political processes in ways that disadvantage opposition groups, as well as the potential consequences such developments could have on Nigeria’s democratic system.

The discussion comes at a time when political analysts and members of opposition parties have continued to question whether the current administration is intentionally creating conditions that weaken dissenting voices.
These concerns have been echoed across various platforms, with some arguing that the space for political competition is narrowing.
Tanko was asked to respond to the growing narrative suggesting that opposition parties are being deliberately undermined.
The question referenced the numerous comments made by analysts and political actors who believe that recent developments point to a pattern of suppression.
In his response, Tanko challenged certain actions taken by political figures, suggesting that such moves raise serious questions about adherence to democratic norms.
He pointed to instances where individuals holding public office have made statements or taken steps that appear to interfere with the independence of other political parties.
He further highlighted the implications of such actions, indicating that they could affect the balance expected in a democratic system where multiple parties are meant to operate freely and competitively.
According to him, the conduct of some officeholders has contributed to the perception that opposition parties are being placed at a disadvantage.
He said, “There is no way a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria should go to another party openly saying that he is going to capture the other political party and keep it in abeyance of the government in power, and has also refused to resign from the party he was elected from.”
