Ijaw leader Chief Edwin Clark has praised former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon for advocating the preservation of the unity of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Gen. Gowon recently appealed to ECOWAS Heads of Governments, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to lift sanctions on Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic, which were imposed following military interventions in the member-states.
Clark, in an open letter to Gen. Gowon titled “I Salute Your Courage in Speaking Out on ECOWAS Sanctions,” expressed pride in Gowon’s efforts to prevent the disintegration of ECOWAS. He commended Gowon for his sense of responsibility as a revered elder statesman and highlighted Gowon’s personal efforts in forming ECOWAS in 1975.
The letter states, “I am not surprised, knowing the personal efforts that you put in towards the formation of the body on 28th May 1975. With great efforts and charisma, you personally engaged all the regional and brought everyone under one roof.”
Clark recalled Gowon’s leadership in uniting diverse regional entities, overcoming language barriers, and political prejudices among military officers. He congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other ECOWAS leaders for heeding Gowon’s counsel, resulting in the removal of most sanctions following the recent summit on February 24, 2024.
The letter concludes with hope that Gowon’s intervention will lead to an amicable resolution within ECOWAS, prompting the three countries to reconsider their decisions to leave the organization.>>>READ FULL ARTICLE HERE
