‘I was denied my salary for the rest of the season, forced to retire from international football’ — Anthony Annan reveals how a Black Stars team doctor’s lie affected him

Former Ghanaian midfielder, Anthony Annan, has come forward with revelations about how a lie from Black Stars team doctors regarding an injury he sustained during a pre-AFCON friendly in 2013 impacted his career.<<<READ FULL ARTICLE>>>

Annan accused the team doctors of falsely claiming that he had suffered the injury while playing for his club, Osasuna, when in reality, it occurred during a game against Egypt as part of the pre-tournament preparations.

During an interview with Geomends Media, Annan explained, “At the time, I was playing for Osasuna in Spain. We had a tournament in South Africa (AFCON 2013), so we had to go camping.

There is a thing in football where if a player is injured, the club will not release you for a national assignment, so my presence in the Black Stars camp means that I was fit.”

Recounting the incident, Annan detailed the friendly against Egypt, where he sustained an ankle injury.

Despite initially thinking it was not severe, the midfielder was unable to continue playing and later discovered he had a cracked bone.

Regardless of receiving various treatments, including injections and beach sand therapy, Annan could not fully recover.

The consequences, according to him, were severe, as he missed the remainder of the tournament and was compelled to retire from international football.

He further revealed that the misinformation from the team doctors had further repercussions, affecting his salary for the second round of the season.

Schalke, his parent club, refused to pay him, believing he was injured while on international duty.

“The journalists kept asking when I was going to get ready, but I never got ready. The doctor had to lie to the journalist that it was an old injury. But if I had an injury, Osasuna wouldn’t have allowed me to join the Black Stars. That thing frustrated me because I was on loan at Osasuna from Schalke 04,” Annan explained.
