Transgenders, cross dressers and LGBT personalities are growing rapidly in Nigeria as the year past-by, the reason could not be far from the fame, connections and money this pattern of life offers, example of such personalities are Bobrisky, Jay Boogie and James Brown.

1. Bobrisky

Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju (born 31 August 1991), predominantly known as Bobrisky, is a Nigerian transgender woman and LGBT personality. She is also known for her presence on the social media apps Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram. She has gone viral on TikTok for creating the “bobrisky” dance in 2021.

2. Fola Francis

Fola FrancisFola Francis (18 March 1994 – 20 December 2023) was a Nigerian transgender model, LGBTQIA+ activist and entrepreneur. In 2022, she became the first trans model to walk the Lagos Fashion Week runway for Cute-Saint and Fruché. Her debut on the runway had ripple effects, with the Lagos Fashion Week’s team deciding not to post any of her pictures.

Unfortunately, this Nigerian transgender model died in 2023 after drowning in a Lagos beach.

3. Jay Boogie

Jay BoogieJay Boogie (born Daniel Anthony Nsikan, 26 June 1998) is a Nigerian transgender fashion enthusiast, brand influencer and social media personality who founded JaySecrets. She became famous on Instagram in her early twenty’s, her gender transition got Nigerians attention on social media platforms. Jay boogie has been enlisted to be among the top ten crossdressers in Nigeria alongside Bobrisky and James Brown.

In an interview with BBC Pidgin , Jay Boogie openly affirmed to being proud and fulfilled living in her true and authentic self as a transgender woman in Nigeria. When asked if she is still identified as a male by the mainstream media and society, Jay responded with a rhetorical question pointing out her feminine physiques. Jay also stated that the strong hate towards transgender people in Nigeria will have a lot of Nigerians choose to welcome harden criminals rather than transgender individuals. She also corrected the misconception people have about her as a gay man pointing out that she is a transgender woman who enjoys the intimacy of only men.

4. Miss Sahhara

Miss SahharaMiss Sahhara (stylized as Miss saHHara) is a British Nigerian singer, model, beauty queen and human rights advocate.

With her 2011 participation in Miss International Queen, a beauty pageant in Pattaya for transgender women, Miss Sahhara became the first trans woman from Nigeria to come out in the international press. She subsequently founded a global transgender awareness news curation organisation called TransValid.

In 2014, she became the first black transgender woman to win an international beauty pageant when she was crowned Super Sireyna Worldwide 2014 on Eat Bulaga!, Philippines longest noontime show.

5. Noni Salma

Noni SalmaNoni Salma is a Nigerian transgender film-maker and screenwriter whose growing up experiences in Lagos, Nigeria has inspired her storytelling. Her works are largely Women and Queer led dramas and comedies. She centers them in her writing in ways that are fresh, inspiring and kicking. Her slice-of-life feature drama screenplay, Raison D’etre is a ScreenCraft Screenwriting Fellowship 2021 Finalist and her comedy pilot, Badass is a ScreenCraft Comedy Competition 2021 semifinalist and on the GLAAD list 2022.

6. James Brown

James BrownJames Chukwueze Obialor, popularly known as WF James Brown, is a Nigerian internet personality, dancer, and cross dresser who was noted in 2018 following a viral video in which he said the phrase “They didn’t caught me” following an arrest by the police. He was arrested alongside 46 others for being allegedly gay and spent a month at the Ikoyi Correctional Facility. The case against them was later dismissed by a court.

Brown released a single titled “Hey Dulings” in 2021 after a catchphrase he uses to address his fans on social media.
