A report shared on the official X handle of The Sun captured comments by Nigerian lawyer and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Kenneth Okonkwo, where he criticised the conduct of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary elections.
Okonkwo made the remarks shortly after the APC leadership announced the winners of its nationwide primaries. He alleged that the voting and result compilation process lacked proper transparency and credibility.
According to him, the manner in which votes were counted and announced reflected serious flaws in the party’s internal electoral system, which he believes has long-term consequences for Nigeria’s democratic development.
He argued that when political parties fail to conduct credible internal elections, they end up producing leaders who are not accountable or competent. In his view, this pattern contributes to broader governance challenges in the country.
In his words, Okonkwo stated: “In APC vote counting method, we witnessed count 100, 500, 1000 as official result of winners. There was no 101. A corrupt tree must produce corrupt fruits. This is why APC as a party has been producing the worst set of leaders for Nigeria.”
His comments have since generated mixed reactions, with supporters agreeing with his concerns about internal democracy, while critics argue that his assessment was overly harsh and politically motivated.
