A former Commissioner for Transport in Rivers State, Dr. Sam Soni Ejekwu, has emerged as the consensus candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2027 election.
Ejekwu, a staunch loyalist of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, was declared the consensus candidate by an electoral committee headed by Tajudeen Yusuf after affirmation votes from the local government areas of the state.
The state Publicity Secretary of PDP, Kenneth Yowika, confirmed that Ejekwu contested as the only candidate and that the process was smooth and transparent.

Ejekwu, who hails from Port Harcourt City, in the Ikwere axis of the state, served twice as Caretaker Chairman of the Port Harcourt Local Government Area.
He also served as Commissioner for Transportation and later Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs as well as the PDP Vice-Chairman, Rivers South East
Party stakeholders and supporters described his emergence as the sole candidate as a reflection of his extensive public service record, deep grassroots connections, and unwavering commitment to the PDP.
Ejekwu expressed confidence in the PDP’s strength in Rivers, highlighting the massive turnout of supporters and the party’s readiness to secure victory in the upcoming elections.
He also hailed the ongoing Rainbow Coalition in the state saying it had the potential to shape political alignments moving forward.
