JUST IN: Kwankwaso Opens Door to Reconciliation With Governor Yusuf, Sets Condition

On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the DAILY POST reported that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and former governor of Kano State, expressed his readiness to reconcile with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, despite ongoing political tensions between them.

In a conversation with BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso stated that he still feels a personal connection to Yusuf and would welcome him back into the fold should he choose to return. He emphasized that their long-standing relationship has not been erased by political differences, noting that disagreements are common in politics and can be resolved through dialogue and mutual forgiveness.

Drawing from past experiences, Kwankwaso cited his own history with former Kano governor Abdullahi Ganduje, with whom he had several disputes but eventually reconciled and resumed collaboration. He attributed the current divide primarily to Yusuf’s decision to leave the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a shift that drew backlash from members of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

Kwankwaso asserted that Yusuf’s election as governor in 2023 was largely due to the support and influence of the movement, underscoring its significant electoral strength in Kano. He added that Yusuf was specifically chosen as the movement’s gubernatorial candidate to demonstrate the effectiveness of its political organization, rather than based on seniority or personal considerations.

Highlighting the value of tolerance in leadership, Kwankwaso argued that effective leaders must accept differing viewpoints and practice forgiveness, stating that political advancement is nearly impossible without openness and a readiness to mend relationships.

He concluded by reaffirming that forgiveness has been a cornerstone of his political career, helping him navigate challenges and maintain resilience over time.
