In a recent interview shared by the official YouTube channel of Arise TV on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, NDC chieftain Asukewe Ikoawaji raised concerns over the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the party’s primary elections.
Reacting to reports of interference and procedural disputes, Ikoawaji called for restraint and professionalism from electoral officials. He stated, “The national chairman of INEC should also call his members to order even with the electoral act and the judgment of the Supreme Court,” stressing the need for adherence to established legal boundaries.
He argued that INEC’s constitutional responsibility is to supervise party primaries, not to act as a deciding authority in internal party matters. According to him, any deviation from this role could undermine the credibility of the electoral process and create unnecessary tension within political parties.
Ikoawaji maintained that the NDC conducted its primaries within the framework of its guidelines and in line with existing laws. He expressed concern that undue interference by regulatory bodies could disrupt the party’s internal processes and affect its preparations for upcoming elections.
He, however, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to due process and urged all stakeholders to respect institutional roles, adding that the NDC remains focused on consolidating its structure and resolving internal concerns.
