JUST IN: Abacha’s 5 Year Rule Was A Period Of Extreme Authoritarianism And Brutal Repression–Amachree

According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Dennis Amachree, a former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services, has described the administration of the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, as a period characterised by severe authoritarianism and harsh suppression of opposition.

The retired intelligence officer said the Abacha regime was also associated with numerous violations of human rights and the persecution of individuals and groups perceived to be opposed to the military government.
