Responding to a Call for the 2027 Presidential Run Governor Mohammed’s comments came in response to a call from a non-governmental organisation urging him to consider running for the presidency in 2027. The organisation had recently honoured him with the title of “Champion of Peace, Unity, and Development.” Addressing the speculation surrounding his potential candidacy, Governor Mohammed stated that he would be open to a leadership role only if former President Goodluck Jonathan does not enter the race. “I have always said that as long as Jonathan is around, I will not present myself for leadership of this country unless he decides not to run,” he affirmed.
Support for Goodluck Jonathan
Governor Mohammed expressed his unwavering support for Jonathan, praising his experience and inclusive governance. “He will do a better job because he has the experience. During Jonathan’s regime, he addressed issues like the Almajiri system and created initiatives for unemployed youths. We need leaders like him—young people with energy, foresight, and drive,” he said. The governor urged supporters to encourage Jonathan to run, suggesting that the former president would be a formidable candidate against the current administration.
Criticism of President Tinubu
Governor Mohammed also addressed recent criticisms he directed at President Tinubu following the “End Bad Governance” protest. He clarified that his remarks were intended as constructive advice to the Federal Government and the presidency, not as an attack. “Leaders at various levels, including governors, have lapses, and they all need to be driven by knowledge,” he noted.
In a direct message to President Tinubu, Governor Mohammed warned that failure to address pressing issues could result in a loss to the PDP in future elections. He also questioned the effectiveness of the current administration’s policies, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies, which he suggested might need to be reconsidered if they do not improve the lives of Nigerians.
