In a remarkable display of resilience and swift action to enhance public safety, the gallant troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have successfully apprehended 12 suspected kidnappers and recovered 14 motorcycles, a locally fabricated pistol, and two bags of Indian hemp during operations in Taraba State.

Suspects

The operation was sparked by a distress call from residents of Chachanji village regarding the abduction of two individuals by a group of approximately 10 armed men on motorcycles on November 7, 2024. Acting with urgency, the troops launched a rapid response mission aimed at rescuing the victims and intercepting the kidnappers.

Upon making contact with the armed group, the troops’ superior firepower forced the kidnappers to withdraw deep into the bush, abandoning their locally fabricated pistol and the two bags of Indian hemp.

The troops conducted a thorough search of the area, successfully preventing further criminal activity and disrupting the kidnappers’ operations.

In a follow-up operation based on credible intelligence, troops on November 9, 2024, arrested 12 suspects and seized 14 motorcycles at a local drinking spot in Mbhakyir village, near Agu Center.

During intensive questioning, the arrested suspects admitted their involvement in the kidnapping operation and identified their leader as Veior John Gata, a notorious criminal on the wanted list of security agencies for orchestrating various criminal activities in southern Taraba and Benue states.

The suspects revealed that Veior had been present at Agu Center on November 5, 2024, prior to the killing of two locals and the abduction of two individuals on November 6 and 7, respectively, in the Chachanji area. They stated that Veior was displeased with the locals in Chachanji and aimed to instill fear among buyers and sellers to ensure the closure of the market.
