Nollywood actor cum politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has blamed the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, for the gale of defections that have befallen the party in recent days.

Okonkwo, in a statement on Thursday via his X account, said the defections are a testament to the loss of confidence in Abure’s leadership.

He urged Abure to resign as the National Chairman of the Labour Party so the party can emerge as a main opposition party capable of defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

“The defection of @NgLabour elected members clearly indicate a loss of confidence in Abure and the army of his incompetent, corrupt, and confused leadership of @NgLabour.

“Abure still has a chance to salvage whatever tattered reputation he has bequeathed to @NgLabour by resigning from any purported leadership of @NgLabour to allow for a new leadership that will bring about the needed reforms to position @NgLabour to become the main opposition party capable of wresting power from the ruling @OfficialAPCNg,” Okonkwo submitted.

The admonition follows shortly after Naija News reported that the Labour Party (LP) had suffered a significant setback as its governorship candidate for the last Bayelsa State election, Udengs Eradiri, along with his running mate, retired Commodore Benjamin Nathus, announced their resignation from the party.

According to reports, several local government chairmen of the Labour Party in Bayelsa also followed suit, aligning with Eradiri and Nathus in their decision to leave the party.
