2027 Politics Too Dirty for Jonathan, Says Sule Lamido

Former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has said the political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 general elections may be too “dirty” for former President Goodluck Jonathan to participate in actively.

Lamido made the remark while speaking on the growing speculations surrounding Jonathan’s possible return to frontline politics. According to him, the current political climate is marked by intense rivalry, personal attacks and desperation for power, making it unsuitable for a statesman of Jonathan’s disposition.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain noted that Jonathan remains widely respected both within and outside Nigeria due to his peaceful conduct during and after the 2015 presidential election. He argued that the former president’s image and legacy should not be dragged into what he described as “muddy political battles.”

Lamido stressed that Nigeria needs leaders who will focus on national unity and democratic stability rather than divisive politics. He added that while Jonathan has the constitutional right to contest any election, the former president may prefer to preserve his statesman status instead of returning to the heated political arena.

The comments come amid renewed discussions over possible alliances and political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential race. Several political figures across party lines have continued to mention Jonathan’s name as a potential consensus candidate.

However, neither Jonathan nor his media aides have officially declared any intention to contest the presidency in 2027.
