According to residents, “El Rufai’s work ethic remains second to none” and his dedication to restoring the FCT Master Plan has yet to be matched by any subsequent minister. In contrast, many believe that the eight years under the Buhari administration were particularly turbulent for the FCT, attributing this to the perceived shortcomings of then-minister Mohammed Musa Bello. Residents expressed apprehension before the unveiling of the new cabinet by the current president.
However, the swift and vigorous approach of Nyesom Wike as the current minister has surprised many residents. They assert that if Wike maintains this momentum, he “is on line to surpassing the exploits of Malam Nasir El Rufai.” This makes it surprising that Senator Hajia Ireti Kingibe, representing the FCT,has criticized the minister for neglect and underperformance.
While some residents sympathize with the senator and recognize potential challenges in her relationship with the minister, they believe she should seek more diplomatic channels to convey her concerns and foster cooperation.
Critics of Minister Wike often cite his tenure as Rivers State governor and his personal quirks. Nevertheless, his performance in the FCT is generally regarded as excellent. It is suggested that Senator Kingibe’s recent media criticisms could have a counterproductive effect.
By supporting rather than opposing Wike, she could potentially benefit politically from his positive achievements. Similarly, it is recommended that
Wike adopt a more conciliatory approach and open communication channels for mutual collaboration, ultimately benefiting FCT residents.
To avoid unnecessary conflict and ensure continued progress in the FCT, it is imperative for both public servants to work together. Taking sides and assigning blame would only exacerbate tensions and hinder positive developments. The residents’ primary desire is for both the minister and the senator to fulfill their mandates without unnecessary disputes.
