Military authorities have addressed recent reports concerning a military fighter jet allegedly bombing the civilian population in the Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

Naija News reported on Wednesday that numerous villagers were feared dead, while several others sustained injuries following an airstrike by a fighter jet that targeted the Lakurawa terrorist group, resulting in the bombing of two communities, Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa.

A  resident of Silame, identified as Malam Yahya, mentioned that the two villages are situated in close proximity to Surame Forest, which is recognized as another hideout for the Lakurawa group and bandits.

However, the joint media coordinator for the operation, Abubakar Abdullahi, in a statement, said the airstrikes targeted locations confirmed to be associated with the Lakurawa terrorist group.

Abdullahi said all military operations are conducted based on thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions to ensure precision and protect civilian lives.

The statement reads, “These reports have raised concerns; however, it is crucial to clarify that all military operations are conducted based on thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions.

“This rigorous process is particularly important when targeting groups like the Lakurawa terrorist organisation, as it aims to ensure precision and protect civilian lives.

“There is a significant risk that terrorist groups may attempt to undermine military successes through media disinformation, necessitating caution concerning unverified claims, especially in the ongoing fight against terrorism and banditry.

“Importantly, the targets struck in the vicinity of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa have been positively identified as associated with the Lakurawa group, reinforcing the justification for the military action taken.”

Similarly, the Spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, Olusola Akinboyewa, confirmed to TheCable that the airstrikes were conducted based on credible intelligence from multiple sources and confirmatory aerial surveillance.
