Former UN Special Rapporteur on Human Trafficking Professor Joy Ezeilo has expressed her concerns about Nigeria’s security situation, saying that the nation is seriously in danger because security issues are becoming politicized and there is widespread incompetence in the system.....CONTINUE READING THE ARTICLE FROM THE SOURCE
Her comments were prompted by the recent appearance of Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), at the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) headquarters in Abuja.
According to DAILY POST, Ajaero was summoned by the police to address accusations related to terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony.
Ezeilo highlighted that Nigeria’s deepening insecurity is a result of those in charge focusing on trivial, irrelevant matters instead of addressing the core issues. She made her concerns public in a post on her social media account on Friday, noting that the actions of the authorities were troubling.
“If what I heard about the police interrogation of NLC Leader Joe Ajaero is true, then we’re in deep trouble with the politicization of security matters and unprofessionalism at its worst,” she stated on Twitter.
“What kind of leaders do we have making decisions about our collective security? It’s clear why insecurity continues to plague Nigeria, as those responsible focus on trivial matters.”
Ezeilo also criticized the decision to handle the issue publicly, which she believes only fueled unnecessary controversy. She called for the authorities to redirect their focus and start taking meaningful action.
“Enough is enough! There’s no time to waste addressing the country’s monumental insecurity. Police, you can and should do better than this. It’s time for action, not just words or political posturing.”
Her remarks resonate with growing concerns that the Nigerian leadership and security forces are more focused on political theatrics than addressing the country’s real and pressing security challenges.
