The Israeli airstrikes targeted several areas in central Syria, killing at least four people and injuring 13 on late Sunday, according to Syria’s state news agency, SANA. The strikes caused significant damage and sparked fires along a highway in Hama province, which firefighters were battling to control into early Monday. Four people were killed, and 13 others were wounded and taken to Masyaf National Hospital in western Hama province. It is still unclear whether the victims were civilians or militants.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitor, stated that one of the strikes targeted a scientific research center in Masyaf, where Iranian militias and experts are reportedly developing weapons. Local media also reported strikes near the coastal city of Tartous.

Israel has not commented on the strikes, which are part of a larger campaign targeting Syrian forces and Iranian-backed groups.

Israel has pledged to stop Iran’s military entrenchment in Syria, a critical route for supplying weapons to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Meanwhile, Israel has closed all border crossings with Jordan after a gunman killed three private security guards at the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge crossing between the occupied West Bank and Jordan.

The Israeli military reported that the attacker, who arrived from the nearby Jordanian town of al-Karameh in a truck, opened fire on the guards early Sunday morning. The Israeli forces “eliminated” the attacker, and an investigation is underway.

Hezbollah has been in conflict with Israeli forces for the past 11 months, coinciding with Israel’s war against Hamas, a Hezbollah ally, in Gaza.
