Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, has passed away at the age of 56. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced his death, expressing heartfelt condolences to Lagbaja’s family, friends, and the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Lagbaja’s remarkable military career spanned over three decades, beginning with his enrollment in the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps in September 1992 and went on to hold significant roles, including platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion.
Lagbaja was also an alumnus of the prestigious U.S. Army War College, where he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, demonstrating his commitment to excellence in military leadership. He is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children.
