The National Judicial Council (NJC) has taken drastic measures against judicial officers found guilty of misconduct. At its 107th meeting, chaired by Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, on November 13-14, 2024, the council sanctioned five serving judicial officers.
Two judges, Justice G.C. Aguma of Rivers State High Court and Justice A.O. Nwabunike of Anambra State High Court, were suspended for one year without pay and placed on a watch list for two years. This decision aims to uphold the integrity of the judiciary.
The NJC also recommended compulsory retirement for two Heads of Court who falsified their ages
The NJC also recommended compulsory retirement for two Heads of Court who falsified their ages. Those affected are Chief Judge of Imo State, Hon. Justice T.E. Chukwuemeka Chikeka, and Grand Kadi of Yobe State, Hon. Kadi Babagana Mahdi.
Additionally, the council considered 30 petitions and empanelled six committees for further investigation. However, 22 petitions were dismissed due to lack of merit, and two were deemed sub judice. A committee was also formed to investigate complaints against Hon. Justice O.A. Ojo, Chief Judge of Osun State.
These actions demonstrate the NJC’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity within the judiciary.
