The Police Service Commission, PSC, has approved the promotion of eight Commissioners of Police, CP, to the rank of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, along with 676 other senior officers to their new ranks. In a statement released on Friday in Abuja, Ikechukwu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations at PSC, announced the promotions. Ani also noted that 15 Deputy Commissioners of Police, DCPs, have been promoted to the rank of CP, and 52 Chief Superintendents of Police have been elevated to Assistant Commissioners of Police, ACP,.
Furthermore, 525 Superintendents of Police, SP, were promoted to Chief Superintendents of Police, CSP, and 84 Deputy Superintendents of Police, DSP, advanced to the rank of SP.
The PSC spokesman highlighted that the eight CPs and 15 DCPs underwent a series of assessments and examinations, a requirement now mandatory for promotion to their new ranks.
These decisions were made during the first plenary meeting of the new PSC board, chaired by Hashimu Argungu.
Ani mentioned that the PSC chairman encouraged the newly promoted officers to engage in continuous self-development and knowledge acquisition to be better prepared for the challenges of 21st-century policing.
Argungu emphasized that police officers will now be required to pass formal examinations before being considered for promotion, aligning with the civil service rule that mandates such requirements. He stated that promotions in the police force would be merit-based and predictable, ensuring that deserving officers are recognized without undue delay.
He congratulated the newly promoted officers, reminding them that their promotion is a call for greater dedication to the service of their country. He urged them to remain committed and focused in the fight against insurgency and banditry in Nigeria.
