There have been indications that a nationwide protest themed “End Bad Governance in Nigeria” is planned for August 1 to 10.

The protest, its organisers say, is to awaken the federal government to the hunger and the rising living costs in Nigeria.

Under the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Lagos, some students have dissociated themselves from the protest.

The students spoke to journalists on Tuesday at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja.

They say they will embark on a solidarity walk instead to encourage the supportive efforts of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos governor.

The students said the move is especially to ensure that the fallout of the “End SARS” protest in the state in 2020 does not repeat itself.

Lekan Alimi, the chairman of Lagos NANS, said the planned nationwide protest against inflation is “absolutely uncalled for”.

Arguing that trying times in the country would “soon fade out”, Akoni said Nigerians must persevere.

“We must remember the importance of stability, peace, and constructive dialogue in achieving our collective goals,” he said.

“We cannot afford to let the destructive events of the past, such as the End SARS protests, repeat themselves.

“Our priority is to defend and preserve the peace and prosperity of Lagos.

“We urge all students to channel their energies into constructive dialogue and positive action, such as volunteering for community development projects, participating in student-government initiatives, and engaging in academic and extracurricular activities.
